Hey, thanks so much for putting out the information so clearly. It has helped me clear some of my doubts. I do have one question if anybody or you could help me with.
I'm exporting the video in Pro res 422 hq but after exporting the colors look not the same as compared to the file. I have turned on color management and have set it to sRGB . Is it becoz of this project setting? the files comprises of psd files or illustrator files only. After exporting it I have also tried converting mov to MP4 in encoder with bitrate vbr pass 1 30 rate. How Can I keep the setting that colors look same after export.

Is it possible to use media encoder to render in aces workflow from after effects (mp4 h.264)? If yes, how?
thanks for the best tutorial, I watched last night and very excited, this morning I start practice, But still confused:
01. I rendered out EXR from Blender in ACEScg or Linear color space
02. Set AE working color space to none
03. import the EXR, uncheck the "preserve RGB", it looks normal(not as dark as linear file), I think it is because of Project setting: Assume working gamma as 2.2.
04. so I use color profile effect to convert it to linear.
05. use OCIO, convert it from linear srgb to ACEScg, then ACEScg to srgb
It always looks different as Blender render viewer.

Very useful material, however I have a question. Is there any way to see in what color gamut the material provided by the customer was recorded? For example, the client sends me several files, each recorded with a different camera, additionally one material is in the log, and the other in a different range of colors. The client does not know what or in what profiles the recorded material would be. How to check?
Hi didnt know i would learn a lot in 1 video. But does that mean if the footages are raw, i wont be able to adjust the raw settings of the footage when i import it to resolve for grading?

Amazing video! could you make a video about media encoder? I want to know how ACES will be converted final video with certain media codec like rec2020. Ive been struggling HDR setting 🙁
Couldn't wait to get up this morning and practice using the ACES workflow. It's working so well, thank you. I do have a question, if I may?
Basic scenario: a simple layer stack of footage + two adjustment layers to use OCIO to roundtrip back to LogC, but preview with OCIO Rec709:
1. ARRI LogC to ACES Rec709 (OCIO) — Preview layer
2. ACEScg back to ARRI LogC (OCIO) — LOG (final) render layer
3. XYZ.mxf ARRI Alexa Log C footage (OCIO Arri Alexa to ACEScg)
All works fantastically, but I'm now confused about which layer I should be adjusting exposure (the preview is a little bright), and if that's the same layer I'd be looking to make any color correction on. I'm assuming Exposure and Lumetri Color would go on the top (preview) adjustment layer, AFTER the OCIO conversion (for basic client previews, not grading), so that changes are in fact being made to the Rec709 image? Have I got that right?
And then, if there's a second source for compositing that needs its own Exposure adjustment, that would come before its own OCIO conversion, with Linear bypassed.

Possibly dumb question: when setting AE working space as none, the "linearize working space" gets grayed out because the math of the operations (blending modes curves etc) will be linear by default. Is this correct? Thanks 🙂
Question: I'm using AE with Win10 OS on a EIZO CG279x monitor; while using the ACES workflow, what color profile should I set the EIZO to? Should I set a user-defined profile that represents ACES? Or should I keep it sRGB since it's OS-piloted? (NOTE: talking about the AE interface/GUI OS-piloted monitor; not using mercury transmit/video preview for now). Thanks!
Roei!! Just letting you know, that I delivered my first round of VFX shots of that project I was telling you about (lots of phone and computer screen replacements). And wouldn't you know it…the colorist (not to mention director) were all quite happy! Thanks so much again for making this…the ACES workflow will be my go-to from here on out! Oh yeah, and I'm totally learning Nuke…cuz after effects isn't going to cut it much longer for me! LOL

Hi there! Thanks for a clear workflow tutorial with Aces .. it’s different then everything else out there in the way u work in no colour space in the project settings.. I tired it today and it works well !! One question .. when importing an exr sequence from maya (srgb linear ) the only thing that happens to it when converting to aces Cg is a slight desaturation and darkening … would u say that’s normal ? .. it’s weird as it feels like I am loosing Color .. it doesn’t look like in my maya scene .. close but not the same :). Toda ! 🙂 Maybe it’s to do with my display convert .. I tried rec out put and Rec display but both do it ..
My God, how I needed a tutorial that talks about this topic, I use after effects since the beta Dance of Monkeys it was called and now when I see your tutorial I feel that I have never used it
Seems crazy that AE doesn't take care of all this for you. I've struggled for years bringing in footage and trying to export it out and have the colours stay exactly the same. I've started learning Blackmagic Fusion and have had no issues with color shifts so far.
