Cursorily writing, there are two online English teachers. Please read what they say pertaining to both the objects if the structure of a sentence is as below:
He gave a book to me. (I know the sentence must be put in the following order (He gave me a book.)
Also, to identify a direct object, we need to frame a question using (What, who, etc.) What we get is the direct object. Similarly, if we make a question using whom or to whom, we get the indirect object.
But in the first sentence (He game a book to me.) Generally, if we try to find out the indirect object, then the pronoun (me) is the indirect object.
But, the teachers say: Though, it appears to be an indirect object but, in reality it is not. The reason; (me) is not the object of the verb. In stead, it is the object of the preposition. Therefore, it is not an indirect object.
During your (Mr Paul's) Direct and Indirect class), your explanation contradicts theirs.
E.g. I made some coffee for you.
As per their justification, the pronoun (you) follows a preposition (for) it must, therefore, be a phrase preposition and not an indirect object.
Please clarify, if time permits you.
