at the end of the day the ona coffee started the distribution tool its like buying if you buy another one its like buying fake gucci
It is definitely not worth it for its functionality alone; however, I still WANT and plan to get one just because I love its look and feel🤩🤩🤩🤩
Hmm
I like my Saint Anthony’s BT wedge. No idea whatsoever how it affects taste or if it’s any better than an $18 dollar one from Amazon.
Is this for real?? What Kooks!!
Very interesting as I have been debating whether or not to get a distribution tool for my Breville Barista Express. One purchase I did make was the dosing cup. I weigh out my beans and grind for each cup, the dosing cup allows me to shake and stir and get the coffee lower into the portafilter, which makes for a less messy and easier to tamp coffee. One thing that makes me hesitant is that my coffee level is still higher than I see yours. Before tamping, my coffee level is slightly higher than the filter edge, while your coffee is below, and doesn’t seem to need to be tamped down. I would think that in my case, Coffee will spill out of the portafilter, reducing the weight of the coffee and then getting a watery coffee. Thanks for sharing and love seeing the science behind the extraction!
lmao my $20 apexstone has no static at all. imagine paying $150 for a distribution tool that doubles as a coffee magnet
Great Aussie product aye… love Ona coffee too, go there whenever I can. I have the black V2 btw.
Hii, just got my linea mini today, do you use the pre brewing for the linea mini? 🙂
Turns out the more money you spend on the distribution tool, the more amazing the taste of espresso!! I would love to see a blind taste test between the OCD V3 and a £10 version!
V2's color scheme makes me think of monster energy drinks.
OCD v3: 4:32
OCD v2 : 4:23
How much can you honestly attribute to confirmation bias? Numbers aside, could you consistently tell the difference in a blind taste test over , say, 10 samples? I’m admittedly a newbie, but it’s hard for me to understand how there’s a detectable difference… like using using a tamp of a different color. Not trying to rag on your results, just trying to understand the “why” of the results.
The reason the shots had higher extractions on the shots without the ocd is because channels created high extraction points throughout the cup slightly raising tds but lowering flavor quality
3 is so much a nicer number than 2, and the colour change must improve taste. Is the box an improvement on v2? Coffee best served in a mug … or by one.
The worst.
Well made, but that coating and static is just way to much. Cheap off brand grooming tools have all worked better for me. 🙁
Taste tests MUST be done blind. Waste of time otherwise.
What's the funnel thing called?
A properly setup shot without the OCD almost certainly would not yield any noticeable taste difference. The extraction difference is within the margin of error. I use a distribution tool as a convenience tool not some b.s. magic device to make the shot taste better or whatever the manufacturer says to try to sell more of them.
I loved how you talk about the numbers and more importantly, talked about the taste of the expresso. Sometimes I forget that the thing that matters to me most at the end will be the taste.
I don’t have a leveling tool yet, but it looks like the tool not only levels, it also pre-compacts the coffee based on the adjustment.
Finally. I should have seen this video first before your other video. At least you tasted it. thank you 🙂
I think as a fairly new piece of espresso gadgetry there is a huge element of "the emperors new clothes" with these distribution tools, be interesting to hear an engineers take on the difference between a $10 Amazon one versus a $135 one with a posh embossed bit on the top, ultimately I believe the machining will be no different and the extra $125 is for marketing wank.
Why did you stop using the OCD tool in the first place?
I'm noticing, that the temperature is not displayed on your Refractometer. Did you make sure that you took measurements at the same refractometer Temperature values? Even a 1 degree Refractometer temperature difference can cause wildly different measurements. This question is also true, for your precious video where you measured TDS of different distribution techniques.
Thanks.
You didn't taste the difference between v2 and v3 to find out they taste the same and come to the conclusion that there's zero reason to spend $149 for the new one? 🙂
What would be an interesting review and maybe you've already done it is compare the $149 OCD with a $20-40 cheapo distributor. Is there even a difference in flavor?
Very nice comparison, thank you. What brand is you tamping mat, looks like very high quality?
Stopped watching because camera was out of focus too long & too close for my taste…
I saw another video where the person turned the tool counter-clockwise. He got bashed in the comments. But turning counter-clockwise made sense to me as the fins actually move and distribute the grounds. It seems to me that just turning clockwise only smoothens the top of the puck and does not actually distribute the grounds.
What do you think?
Have you experimented with first turning counter-clockwise to distribute, and then turning clockwise to smoothen the top of the puck?
I wonder whether you found reduced statics in the V3? They advertise the coating as static reducing, but sadly you only showed the static on the V2… I personally don’t find the coating visually attractive but would go for it if it really helps? Btw, thnx for sharing your opinions. Keep it up pls!
Why do you polish? Also, your tamper wobble while tamping is something to notice as well.
