I grow a lot of orchids in lava rock. It works really well for me (cattleyas, dendrobiums, brassavolas, some laelia hybrids). I live in zone 6, for reference. I do still grow some things like masdevallias and restrepias in moss. Terrestrial orchids are also grown in an organic mix.

Hi Dany,could you help me with something? I've just received 2 orchids.Dendrobium Phal. One is a seedling with almost no roots…it is not potted.And another one a mature one ,potted,with very few roots.Should i pot/repot them right now?In what medium type?

I have a question though: what if my dendrobium nobile doesn't take a winter rest? I received it in bloom in march and in November he decided to put out another show AND start a new cane. And between March and November he produced 2 or 3 canes. There is no stopping this orchid, what do I do?
I bought an orchid about 8 months ago and it was severely dehydrated. So I cut off the dried up roots? and cut off the stork that has the flower on it. Back then I didn't know not to cut off the stork, so now it has nothing top flower from. How can I get this orchid to grow a new stork so it can flower?

I'm using for my Laelias a coarse bark – moss – pumice mix and it's really working for me. (Hungary, room temp. 18-24°C, 60% humidity) Question 1 : how often do you repot these orchids?
Question 2: could you make a video about saving leafless orchids? One of my oncidium lost all leaf because of spidermites and one of my masdevallia lost her leafs during shipping. The roots are fine, but is a leafless orchid still salvageable?
Question 3: please, if you have any Bifrenaria, could you make a "how to care" video? I just recived them as seedlings and I didn't find about them too much on the internet.

Good morning, Great video. What medium are you using for catts. We live in about the same envoirment. I m presently have some of my catts in organic and some in leca. I really cant make up my mind. Thanks
I grew my laelias in rocks (lava, seramis and other), and had no success on summer (only spring-winter-autumn). And then I mixed bark and rocks ( 50/50). And omg it's worked in my environment.

Do you have orchid's you keep outside buy bring inside during cold weather? I had more mature phalaenopsis that did well but younger one that died. Was wondering if it's the transmission or something else I did wrong

I completely agree with your comments regarding causation and correlation! I think that we must individually determine based on the parameters of our individual environment what works best. Here, in Canada, the environment varies widely from one place to an other. Understanding the temperature, humidity, light intensity, etc will help each grower determine what is optimal. I Use all types of organic and inorganic media depending on what I think will create the best environment for each orchid. Thanks for showing us how you manage your environment. My cattleyas loved lava rock during the summer when I could easily water often and it’s quite humid here. Rick in Florida has done videos of his orchids grown this way including phals. When I brought the plants in for the winter, the dry house (despite having humidifiers going) made this a challenge. So – on to something different.

You would expect them to do better in more water retentive media in your environment. At least up until the organic media breaks down. Will be interesting to see the results. 🤔
Danny – The trick to using the lava rock, stones and pebbles is the wicking you use. I've planted a couple of dozen phals half with bark/moss and half with rocks and both with wicking. All of those in rocks are jamming while others not so much. The stones never degrade and they don't affect the pH and TDS like organic media does. I use glass planters for many of the stones mounts because I really like the look of the jelly bean gravel, lava and river rock, LECA much like you have in the purple pot. With the wicking, it's stays perfectly moist for a very long time. I differ with my wicking with rocks in that I use prachute cord (from Amazon) and run it up and through the stones and near the roots. This keeps the rocks quite damp…especially the pea gravel and lava rock. The lava rock also creates nice bigger air pockets. The only downside for the rocks in larger pots is weight and glass algae but I keep those out of the sun.
Btw, have you ever considered using algae remover used in aquariums? If it's safe for fish, I'm wondering if it's safe for orchids too.

Thank you for all your knowledge and experimentation! I am always looking for ways of keeping my orchids thriving. Funny thing, I live in Hawaii where they grow pretty easily. Still, it's great to see all the mediums available to put the plants in. I currently am trying the clay spheres you were using a year or two ago. In the humid environment they seem to be happy and I'm not having to change the media as often as the bark. I would not have known about this without watching your channel. Thank you!
